Does Facebook owe its users a public editor?

I recently spent some time in conversation with Joe Carmichael of Inverse.  He asked “Does Facebook Owe Its Users a Public Editor?” My top line answer is accountability and openness always serve the public well.

The question came in the wake of the controversy of the live streaming of the police shootings in the United States.  Today the topic would be the live stream videos from Nice.  Sadly, there will be no shortages of other examples.

But there are other issues too — what can and should users expect from their digital news sources?  What fundamental values should pertain in this environment as ONO urges all news media to commit to openness and accountability.
