1997 survey of ONO members

To: ONO Members and Friends
From: Elissa Papirno
Re: Results of ONO survey
Date: April 7, 1997

At long last, here are the results of the survey that was distributed to ONO members last December. The idea was to evaluate some of the new ways ombuddies are using to communicate with readers, from e-mail to reader forums. With all of us so pressed for time, the question was what's the best, most valuable use of the limited resources we have. Twenty-eight people from five countries responded. Participants did not necessarily answer every question; so there are statistical gaps.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • 24 people write columns and 21 write memos -- an endeavor most consider "very valuable."
  • 22 speak to community groups and are equally divided on whether this is a "very" or "somewhat" valuable activity.
  • 13 have secretaries and 15 don't.
  • 7 have hosted reader forums, but most who did found them "very" valuable.
  • Most receive e-mail and faxes from readers; respondents were evenly divided on the usefulness of e-mail and less enthusiastic about faxes.
  • 8 attend daily news meetings, either to observe or participate.
  • Requests for information are handled most often by news libraries (12); and 12 news organizations charge the public for supplying additional information and research (not necessarily the same 12); the public gets information and research free at 9.
  • Hiring a secretary or assistant was the most common response to a question about how the ombuds would change their jobs if they could (7 gave that answer)
  • Giving readers contact with or serving as a conduit to the institution were the most frequent answers to a question about the single most important aspect of an ombud's job (14), while 7 mentioned their columns.
  • 19 people said they'd be interested in joining an e-mail group to share information and questions. More on that at a later date: We're still working to make it happen.

If you are thinking of trying something new and wonder who's been there before, feel free to contact me, preferably by e-mail (readerep@courant.com), for more specific information about which ombuddies have done what. Thanks to all who participated! -- Elissa Papirno
