A loss of accountability
Mário Magalhães recently wrote his last column as ombudsman at Folha de São Paulo. His year-long mandate came to an end, and while it could be renewed for up to two more terms, he was unable to reach agreement with his bosses to continue in his role at the newspaper.
It seems management wanted to end online publication of Magalhães'
daily critiques of the newspaper. Magalhães disagreed with the demand to roll back the transparency of the job as a condition to renew. An impasse ensured and he vacated the position.
Going forward, readers will no longer have access to the commentaries produced by the ombudsman. Only employees of the newspaper and the company will be able to read them. "The tendency around the world is expansion of transparency at news organizations," says Magalhães.
"Things at Folha appear to be going in the opposite direction."

Another voice silenced
The Star-Telegram in Fort Worth, Texas, is the latest U.S. newspaper to eliminate its ombudsman position. David House's last day was April 25. While he didn't have an opportunity write a "farewell" column, we highlight his final column -- a look at reporting styles and readers'
perceptions of editorializing.
